Technology Ebooks

Does your library have technology ebooks? If so, do your patrons use them. My library just recently acquired the Safari Technology Collection. and I have to say that I am quite impressed. They have most of the dummies series, the missing manual series, the hacks series and hundreds of other ebooks on business, computers and technology. We have had access to other ebooks via ebrary and netlibrary mostly on business, fiction, science, philosophy and politics and while our students are starting to use them, when you think about it, it makes more sense to offer technology related ebooks since well you are reading them on a computer. To reaffirm this, we had one of our computer instructors who has never had a librarian present in his classes request a presentation as soon as he found out about the computer and technology ebooks. Any thoughts?

Two thing occur to me about this.

    1. Technology e-books seem like a no-brainer, as tech changes so quickly. There’d be nothing to ‘weed’, as works become obsolete. Even if the vendor doesn’t reconfigure the package, obsolete titles aren’t taking up shelf space, or spurring local controversy by becoming visible in a dumpster.

    2. While tech people tend to be pretty comfortable reading on their computer screens, they also like to have their entire desktop free for testing out what they’re learning in whatever book they’re using. Popping back & forth between windows is frankly annoying when one is working intensively.

‘Borrowable’ e-books, transferable to handheld devices might be a better solution to what I perceive to be a dilemma. (We all know that Kindle’s impossible right now; but Sony Reader? Other e-ink devices that would read the format? iPhone/iPod touch? BlackBerry?) I know from my own experience that I prefer looking back & forth between devices to switching focus between windows. I hate using print tech manuals, because one needs a stand, or a spare elbow to hold them open…

I will be very interested to see how this shakes out. I do hope that the best technology wins — and not just the ‘best-marketed’.
